Toddler Calm Down Corner

My toddler was struggling with big emotions so we put together a calm down corner for him. We made sure to explain when he could visit the calm down corner and what would happen while he was there. The first few times we went there together so I could walk him through the process.

I explained the process as:

1. Identify which emotion you are feeling by using the cards.

2. Find something in the box that helps you feel calm. You can choose more than one thing and spend however long you need until you feel settled down.

3. Come find me when you’re done and we can go over what happened and what you can do next time using the posters.  You can also explain how you’re feeling and why.

I have switched out materials based on his interests and to keep the box updated.

My son likes tight spaces so I tucked this in a corner behind a big chair because I know that’s a place he feel safe and calm.

I also laminated everything and used Velcro dots to make it more durable and reusable.

These emotions cards are super helpful for identifying how he is feeling.

I made these posters to help us go over why he had to go and what he can do next time. These are also laminated and in the bin.
