We Put a Basketball Hoop in Our Living Room and It Was the Best Decision Ever (Silent Basketball Trend)

March 28, 2026March 31, 2026 Bri Weimar Comments Off on We Put a Basketball Hoop in Our Living Room and It Was the Best Decision Ever (Silent Basketball Trend)
TL;DR: We installed an indoor basketball hoop in our living room with silent basketballs and it is the best impulse purchase we have ever made. The kids play for HOURS, it burns energy without destroying the house, and the foam balls are genuinely quiet. Here is everything we used, what it cost, and whether it is worth the hype (spoiler: absolutely yes).

I saw @Christine Andrew put a full basketball hoop in her living room and my brain immediately went: “We are doing this. Today.”

My husband was on a ladder within the hour. The kids have not stopped playing since. And honestly? It might be the single best thing we have added to our house this year.

If you have been seeing the silent basketball trend all over TikTok (51+ million posts and counting), here is your sign. It is not just a trend — it is a genuinely great addition to your house, especially if you have kids who need to burn energy indoors.

What Is a Silent Basketball?

A silent basketball is a foam ball that looks and feels like a real basketball but makes almost no noise when you dribble or shoot it. No bouncing racket, no thudding against the wall, no “STOP BOUNCING THAT BALL IN THE HOUSE” every 5 minutes.

They are made of high-density polyurethane foam, so they have a realistic bounce and weight but without the ear-splitting noise of a real ball on hardwood. They are also soft enough that they will not damage walls, furniture, or your TV (I was worried about the TV — it is fine).

Why We Put a Basketball Hoop in Our Living Room

Because my kids have the energy of a thousand suns and nowhere to put it when it is too hot, too cold, or too rainy to go outside.

We have a hallway nook that was basically wasted space — too narrow for furniture, too wide to ignore. Mounting a hoop up high in that nook turned dead space into the most-used spot in the house.

The kids play before school, after school, during homework breaks, and honestly any time they walk past it. It is also become a family competition spot — we keep score on the fridge.

What You Need to Set This Up

Here is everything we used:

The Hoop

You have two options here — a purpose-built indoor silent basketball hoop or a standard mini hoop. We went with a real rim mounted high on the wall for that authentic feel.

WAWAWEWA The Official Silent Basketball Hoop Indoor – Large Plastic Wall-Mounted

WAWAWEWA Indoor Silent Basketball Hoop

A large wall-mounted hoop designed specifically for silent basketballs. You can use adhesive or screws to install (we used screws — go with screws if you want it to last). Fits perfectly in a hallway nook or bedroom wall. Around $28

SKLZ Pro Mini Basketball Hoop - 18" x 12" Clear, Shatterproof Backboard, Breakaw

SKLZ Pro Mini Indoor Basketball Hoop

If you do not want to drill holes, this over-the-door hoop has 35,000+ reviews for a reason. Shatterproof backboard, breakaway rim, padded hooks. Works great with silent balls too. Around $35

The Silent Basketballs

This is the key to the whole setup. You want foam balls that actually bounce well and feel realistic.

NERO SPORT Ninja Silent Basketball- Soft Foam Indoor Hoop Play | Soundless Ball

NERO SPORT Ninja Silent Basketball

The best-rated silent basketball on Amazon. Soft foam, realistic bounce, genuinely quiet. Size 3 (7 inches) is perfect for kids. Buy two — trust me, one will end up under the couch and you will need a backup. Around $27

Silent Basketball and Hoop Set, Silent Basketball, 2026 Upgrade Quiet Foam Indoo

Silent Basketball and Hoop Set (Combo)

If you want everything in one purchase — this bundle includes a foam silent basketball and a wall-mount hoop. Great starter set if you are testing the waters before going full living room basketball court. Around $24

Is It Actually Quiet?

Genuinely yes. On a scale of “library silence” to “real basketball on hardwood,” silent basketballs land at about a “soft thud.” You can hear it, but it is not disruptive. I can be on a work call in the next room while the kids play and it is fine.

The only noise complaint: the net swishing. Which honestly just adds to the satisfaction.

Will It Damage My Walls?

If you mount the hoop properly with screws into a stud, the hoop itself will not damage anything. The foam balls are soft enough that they will not scuff or dent walls. We have had ours up for weeks with zero damage.

One tip: if you are mounting high in a nook like we did, make sure it is into a stud or use heavy-duty wall anchors. The hoop needs to handle the force of balls hitting the backboard.

Best Spots to Mount an Indoor Hoop

  • Hallway nook or alcove: This is what we did — the narrow walls keep the ball contained
  • Above a bedroom door: Classic setup, works great for older kids
  • Basement or playroom: If you have the space, go full-size
  • Garage wall: Weather-proof indoor play
  • Living room accent wall: The @Christine Andrew flex — mount it high and make it a feature

Why This Is Better Than Every Other Indoor Activity

I have bought approximately 4,000 “indoor activities” for my kids. Arts and crafts last 10 minutes. Board games end in fights. Screen time comes with guilt.

The indoor basketball hoop? They play independently. They play together. They play with their dad. They play with friends who come over. It burns actual energy. And the only cleanup is putting the ball back on the shelf.

If you have a kid who needs to move (and let us be honest — that is most of them), this is the best investment under $60 you will make this year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are silent basketballs really quiet?

Yes — they make a soft thud when dribbled but nothing close to the noise of a real basketball. You can comfortably be on a phone call in the next room while kids play. The net swishing is the loudest part.

Will a silent basketball damage my walls or furniture?

No. The foam is soft enough that it will not scuff, dent, or damage walls. We have had ours in a living room with no damage after weeks of daily use. Just make sure the hoop is mounted securely.

What size silent basketball should I buy for kids?

Size 3 (7 inches) is best for kids under 10. Size 5 (8.5 inches) works for older kids and teens. Size 7 is full adult size. When in doubt, go smaller — it is easier for little hands and still works great with indoor hoops.

How do you mount an indoor basketball hoop?

Find a stud in the wall using a stud finder, then screw the mounting bracket directly into the stud. If no stud is available, use heavy-duty wall anchors rated for the weight. Adhesive mounts work but are less reliable for heavy use.

Is the indoor basketball hoop trend worth it?

100% yes. It is one of the best investments under $60 for families with active kids. It burns energy, encourages independent play, and creates zero mess. The silent basketball makes it apartment and living room friendly.
