Elf on the Shelf With ADHD: Easy Ideas and How I Actually Remember to Move Them

November 4, 2026November 1, 2026 Bri Weimar Leave a comment

We have three elves in this house. Two small ones and one big one. The big one is 5 feet tall. I did that to myself, and I would do it again.

Both of my kids still believe. Tatum is 9 and Tessa is 4, which means I am currently running a nightly covert operation for two separate audiences with two separate levels of suspicion. I also have ADHD. So if you have ever woken up at 6am, remembered the elf, and felt your soul leave your body, hi. This post is for you.

Here is how an ADHD mom actually keeps up with Elf on the Shelf, plus the easy Elf on the Shelf ideas we have actually done, with how to recreate them.

How to Remember to Move the Elf on the Shelf (The ADHD Answer)

We set an alarm. Every night. That is the whole secret, and it is not glamorous.

And yes, there have been times the alarm went off, we were already in bed, and we had to get back up and do it anyway. Nobody tells you that the magic of Christmas sometimes looks like an adult in socks tiptoeing past a bedroom door at 10:47pm holding a pipe cleaner.

If your brain works like mine, memory is not a strategy. Systems are. Here is what I recommend:

  • Set a recurring nightly alarm for all of December. Label it something your kids cannot read over your shoulder, or just label it “ELF” and hope.
  • Pick the alarm time before you are horizontal. An alarm that goes off once you are already in bed is how you end up getting out of bed. Ask me how I know.
  • Make a list of ideas ahead of time. Write out more ideas than you need before December 1, so your 10pm brain only has to pick one, not invent one.
  • Keep all elf supplies in one bin. Pipe cleaners, paper, tape, markers, small props. One bin. One place. No hunting through the junk drawer in the dark.
  • Plan lazy nights on purpose. Not every night needs a production. Some nights the elf just sits somewhere new, and that counts.

Easy Elf on the Shelf Ideas We Have Actually Done

1. The Arrival: Elves on the Christmas Tree

Elf on the Shelf arrival on the Christmas tree with Christmas is here and Hello welcome letters and a globe

For the arrival, our elves showed up in the Christmas tree with welcome letters that said “Christmas is here” and “Hello,” plus a globe. Simple, festive, and it does not require you to build anything at midnight.

How to recreate it:

  1. Tuck the elves securely into the branches of your tree.
  2. Add letter cutouts or a short welcome note spelling out a greeting.
  3. Set a globe (or any map) nearby as a little “we traveled here” prop.

2. Toast Jackets by the Toaster

Two Elf on the Shelf elves wearing bread slice toast jackets next to a toaster, an easy Elf on the Shelf idea

This is one of my favorite easy Elf on the Shelf ideas because it is basically bread. Two elves wearing slices of bread as “jackets” next to the toaster, with a note dated December 1 explaining that it was cold flying from the North Pole, so they made a toast jacket. The note says they are nice and toasty now.

How to recreate it:

  1. Grab a slice of bread for each elf.
  2. Cut or tear a small hole in the middle and slide it over the elf’s head like a poncho.
  3. Set the elves next to the toaster.
  4. Write a short note about how cold the flight was and how toasty they are now.

Total effort: one slice of bread per elf and a pen. This is an ADHD-approved night.

3. The Monster Truck Sleigh

Elves riding a monster truck sleigh pulled by toy monster trucks wearing pipe cleaner antlers on a kitchen island, with a 5 ft elf in the background

On the kitchen island, the elves rode a monster truck sleigh pulled by a line of toy monster trucks wearing pipe-cleaner antlers. The big elf hung out in the background, supervising, as one does when one is 5 feet tall.

How to recreate it:

  1. Line up your kids’ toy monster trucks (or any toy cars) in a row like reindeer.
  2. Twist brown pipe cleaners into antler shapes and attach one set to each truck.
  3. Put the elves in or on the lead vehicle as the sleigh.
  4. Use a flat surface like a counter or island so nothing rolls away overnight.

Bonus: you are using toys you already own, which means no store run and no new clutter.

4. The Big Elf on the Climbing Wall

A 5 ft poseable elf climbing the rope and climbing wall in a kids playroom

Our big elf climbed the rope and climbing wall in the playroom. A big elf is a whole different game, because it is poseable and it can do things the little ones physically cannot. If you want one, here is the 5 ft poseable elf we use.

How to recreate it:

  1. Pose the big elf’s hands on the rope or holds.
  2. Bend the legs so it looks mid-climb.
  3. Make sure it is stable so it does not fall in the night and become a jump scare.

Lazy Elf on the Shelf Ideas for Nights You Forgot

These are suggestions for when the alarm goes off and you have nothing left:

  • Move the elf to a new high spot, like the top of the fridge or a bookshelf.
  • Have the elf hold a book or a remote.
  • Put the elf inside a cabinet with the door slightly open.
  • Leave a short note and call it a day.
  • Reuse a prop from an earlier night in a new spot.

Elf on the Shelf FAQ

How do I remember to move the Elf on the Shelf?

Set a recurring nightly alarm for all of December, ideally before you get into bed. That is what we do in our house, because with ADHD, remembering on my own is not a plan.

What are easy last-minute Elf on the Shelf ideas?

Toast jackets (a slice of bread and a note), elves riding toy cars, or simply moving the elf to a new spot. Keep a written list of ideas and a supply bin ready so last minute does not mean last resort.

What do I do if I forget to move the elf?

Move it as soon as you remember, even if that means getting out of bed. If it is already morning, many families explain that the elf liked its spot or was resting. Then set the alarm.

How many elves should you have?

As many as you can keep up with. We have two small elves and one 5 ft elf, and it works for us because we have a system.

You do not need a perfect elf every night. You need an alarm, a bin, and a list. The rest is just bread.
